See if OAI-SearchBot may crawl your page, why GPTBot is a different switch, and if your text is readable without JavaScript.
OpenAI uses three different bots. Only one of them decides if you can show up in ChatGPT search.
OAI-SearchBot crawls pages that ChatGPT search can show and link. OpenAI says sites that block it are not shown in ChatGPT search answers. OpenAI recommends allowing it.
GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI’s models. It is a separate switch. Blocking GPTBot does not remove you from ChatGPT search.
When a user asks ChatGPT about a page, ChatGPT-User may open it. OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply to these visits. They don’t decide what appears in search.
We fetch your robots.txt and your page once, as our own bot. We never pretend to be an OpenAI bot, and we don’t ask ChatGPT anything.
Real citation tracking means asking ChatGPT questions, many times, every day. This free tool doesn’t do that. It checks the part you control: whether the door is open.
Add these groups to the robots.txt in the root of your site:
User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /
User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /The first group lets OAI-SearchBot in, so ChatGPT search can show your pages. The second group is optional: it keeps your pages out of model training without hiding you from search.
A group named after a bot replaces the group for all bots (User-agent: *) for that bot. So copy any Disallow lines you still want into it too.
Want to know if ChatGPT names you? Ask it the questions your customers ask. Try a few wordings, because answers change.
Our free prompt generator writes those questions for you. Nothing is sent to an AI: you paste them into ChatGPT yourself.
Get free prompts to test ChatGPTCheck the referral report in your analytics for visits from ChatGPT. That shows clicks, not how often you were named.
No. OpenAI treats GPTBot (training) and OAI-SearchBot (search) as separate settings. You can block one and allow the other.
OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI says sites that block it are not shown in ChatGPT search answers, although they can still appear as a plain link.
It opens a page when a ChatGPT user or a custom GPT asks for it. OpenAI says robots.txt rules may not apply to it. It isn’t used to decide what appears in search.
About 24 hours for search, according to OpenAI. Run this check right away to make sure the rule itself is right.
No. That would mean asking ChatGPT lots of questions, and this free tool doesn’t do that. Use our prompt generator and ask ChatGPT yourself.
An open door doesn’t make your page the best answer. Our page analysis scores your content on 22 metrics and tells you what to fix first.
