Passage ranking
Passage ranking is an AI system Google uses to identify individual sections, or passages, of a web page, to better understand how relevant the page is to a search.
In plain words
A long page can cover many things. Passage ranking lets Google notice that one part of it answers a specific question well.
Google lists it in its official guide to Search ranking systems.
Example
A long article about home insulation has one short section about insulating an old wooden floor. For that very specific question, that one section can be what makes the page relevant.
Why it matters for AI search
Google says its systems understand the nuance of several topics on one page and can show the relevant piece to people.
So structure counts: a clearly separated section is easier to understand on its own.
What you can do
- Give each subtopic its own heading.
- Answer the heading in the first one or two sentences below it.
- Avoid sections that wander between topics.
Often confused with
- Chunking
- Chunking is how retrieval systems split documents before indexing. Passage ranking is a specific Google ranking system.
