Microsoft Copilot SEO: How to Get Cited in Copilot Answers

Copilot finds its sources through Bing. Here's how to make sure it can find, use and quote your pages.

Facts checked on October 19, 2026. Every claim links to its source at the bottom.

The short answer

Copilot looks things up in Bing. If Bing can't find or use your page, Copilot can't quote it. So Copilot SEO is mostly Bing SEO, plus a few settings you should not switch on by accident.

How Copilot finds its sources

When Copilot needs fresh facts, it writes a short search query and sends it to Bing. It reads the results and writes an answer with links to the pages it used. Bing's guidelines say the same crawling and indexing that power Bing search also power Copilot.

Microsoft calls this grounding: the answer is built on real search results. In the work version of Copilot, the citations even show the exact web queries it used.

One catch: at work, Copilot doesn't always see the web. Users and admins can switch web search off. Then no web page shows up in the answer, however good it is.

Step 1: Make sure Bing can find you

A page that isn't in Bing's index can't be a Copilot source. These four basics take care of that.

  1. Add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap.
  2. Use IndexNow to tell Bing when you add, change or delete a page. Bing, Yandex, Naver, Seznam.cz, Yep and Amazon take part. Sending a URL doesn't guarantee it gets indexed.
  3. Don't block Bingbot in robots.txt. Bing lists this as something to avoid. Microsoft documents no separate Copilot crawler, so blocking Bingbot very likely shuts Copilot out too.
  4. Keep your important text in the HTML itself. Bing warns that content it can't render reliably may not be indexed or picked for answers.

Step 2: Don't switch yourself off by accident

A few small tags decide how much of your page Copilot may use. They're easy to add by mistake, for example with one checkbox in your CMS. Here's what each one does, according to Bing's guidelines.

Page tags and what they do to Copilot
TagWhat it does to Copilot
noindexThe page stays out of Bing search, Copilot and grounding results.
noarchiveYour content is not used in Copilot answers or grounding results.
nocacheCopilot may only use the URL, title and snippet. Bing advises against it if you want rich citations.
nosnippet / data-nosnippetBing shows no text preview, and Copilot's citations of the page may get weaker.
data-snippetLets you mark which text Bing may show or quote.

Rule of thumb: if you want Copilot to quote a page, leave noarchive and nocache off. Use noindex only for pages you really want hidden. And remember: robots.txt controls crawling, not indexing.

Bing introduced noarchive and nocache for its chat answers in September 2023, when Copilot was still called Bing Chat. Its current guidelines still use both.

Step 3: Write pages Copilot can quote

Bing's guidelines now call this work Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). Their advice is short:

  • State facts and definitions outright. Don't make the reader guess.
  • Use the same name for the same thing everywhere: people, companies, products and places.
  • Give each URL one main topic, and make the title and headings match it.
  • Put the most important information near the top. Skip the long intro.
  • Keep facts up to date, and ping IndexNow when you change them.

Bing also lists what it treats as abuse. That includes "artificially engineered language" written to trigger AI answers, and prompt injection: content meant to steer the AI. Pages that do this can lose visibility or be removed.

And structured data? Bing says it "may support clearer grounding" but guarantees nothing. It must match what's visible on the page. Check yours with our free schema validator.

Step 4: Measure your Copilot citations

Since 10 February 2026, Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report (public preview). It shows how often your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot, in AI summaries on Bing and in some partner products.

What the report shows

Total citations
How often your site was shown as a source.
Average cited pages
How many different pages of yours were cited per day, on average.
Grounding queries
The search phrases the AI used when it picked your content. This is a sample, not the full list.
Page-level citations
Which of your URLs get cited most.
Added on 16 June 2026
Intents and Topics group your grounding queries. Citation Share is your share of all citations for one query; Bing calls it observational, not a ranking. Compare puts two time periods side by side.

What it doesn't show: clicks. Bing says Citation Share doesn't represent traffic share either. For visits, look for copilot.microsoft.com as a referrer in your analytics. How to track AI referral traffic.

How big is Copilot, really?

In October 2025, Microsoft said its "family of Copilots" passed 150 million monthly active users. That counts coding, security, work and consumer tools together. So it's not the number of people who search the web with Copilot.

Clicks tell a smaller story. On the websites StatCounter measures, Copilot sent 1.79% of all visits coming from AI chatbots in September 2026. In the Netherlands it was 3.63%, a little ahead of Perplexity (3.07%).

Two ways to measure Copilot
SourceWhat it measuresCopilot
Microsoft, Oct 2025 (company claim)Monthly users of all Copilot products together150 million+
StatCounter, Sep 2026, worldwideShare of AI chatbot visits to the websites StatCounter measures1.79%
StatCounter, Sep 2026, NetherlandsThe same, for visitors in the Netherlands3.63%

Both can be true at once. Lots of people use Copilot at work, but few of those chats end with a click to a website.

Frequently asked questions

Does Copilot use Google?

No. Microsoft documents that Copilot sends its web searches to Bing. Ranking well in Google doesn't automatically put you in Copilot.

If I block Bingbot, am I out of Copilot?

Very likely, yes. Microsoft documents no separate Copilot crawler, and Bing's guidelines say not to block Bingbot. A page Bing can't crawl can't be used as a source.

Does schema markup help Copilot cite me?

It may help Bing understand the page, but Bing says it guarantees nothing. Add it where it's accurate, not as a trick to get cited.

Do I need an llms.txt file for Copilot?

Not as far as anyone knows. Bing's guidelines don't mention llms.txt. Being in Bing's index is what counts.

How fast do changes show up in Copilot?

Nobody can give you a fixed number. IndexNow tells Bing about a change right away, but Bing decides when to crawl again. Watch the AI Performance report to see it happen.

Does GEO-Score measure my Copilot citations?

No. GEO-Score checks whether a page is easy for AI to read and quote. For real Copilot citation numbers, use Bing's AI Performance report.

Is your page easy for Copilot to quote?

GEO-Score checks whether a page is clear, well built and easy for AI to quote. It doesn't track Copilot citations; Bing's report does that.
