Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)
Also called: UCP
The Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open-source standard that gives platforms, AI agents and businesses a common language for agentic commerce, from discovery to checkout.
In plain words
Agentic commerce means an AI agent shops or books on someone’s behalf.
UCP’s website calls it "the common language for platforms, agents, and businesses". It started with retail and has published a draft specification for lodging.
Example
An agent asked to reorder printer ink could use UCP to find the product at a shop and complete the checkout, without filling in the shop’s web forms.
Why it matters for AI search
Google mentions protocols like UCP as emerging ways to let its Search agents do more.
For online shops, it is a sign that buying through AI agents is being standardized.
What you can do
- Keep product data accurate and complete: names, prices and availability.
- Keep your Merchant Center feed and product data up to date; Google says these help products appear in AI responses.
- Follow the UCP specification if you run a commerce platform or a large shop.
Often confused with
- MCP
- MCP connects AI applications to any outside system. UCP is specifically about commerce.
