Crawl and index controls
data-nosnippet
data-nosnippet is an HTML attribute that tells Google not to use a specific part of a page in its search snippets.
In plain words
Google supports it on span, div and section elements. Any value you give it is ignored: the attribute alone counts.
The HTML must be valid, with tags closed properly. An unclosed div can hide everything after it.
Example
Google’s own example is below. The first part of the sentence can appear in a snippet; the part inside the span can’t.
<p>This text can be shown in a snippet
<span data-nosnippet>and this part would not be shown</span>.
</p>Why it matters for AI search
Google lists data-nosnippet among the controls to limit what Search shows from your pages, AI features included.
Text marked with it won’t appear in featured snippets or in regular snippets.
What you can do
- Use it for text you don’t want quoted, such as a price that changes daily or an internal note.
- Only put it on span, div or section elements.
- If a page also has nosnippet, Google says nosnippet takes priority.
Often confused with
