Answer engine
An answer engine is a search tool that gives you a written answer to your question instead of only a list of links.
In plain words
You ask a question in normal language. The tool searches, reads and writes a reply, often with links to the sources it used.
Optimizing your content for these tools is called answer engine optimization (AEO). This page is about the tools themselves.
Example
Google says AI Mode gives an AI-powered response with links to supporting websites. OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot surfaces websites in ChatGPT’s search features, and PerplexityBot surfaces and links websites in Perplexity’s search results.
Why it matters for AI search
In an answer engine, the answer itself is the result. Being one of the linked sources is what puts your page in front of the reader.
Each answer engine finds pages its own way, often with its own crawler.
What you can do
- Check that the search crawlers of these tools may visit your site, such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot.
- Answer common questions directly and early on your pages.
- Read our page on answer engine optimization for the full approach.
Often confused with

- A chatbot without search
- A chatbot without search answers only from its training data. An answer engine looks things up first.
