State of GEO — Quarterly Report
Q2 2026
Generative Engine Optimization readiness across 4,441 websites in the representative sample. 4,452 page-level analyses across 22 metrics.
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing content to be cited by AI search engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Claude. When a user asks "best CRM for small teams," these engines crawl the web, synthesize an answer, and cite 3-5 sources. GEO ensures your site is among those cited.
This matters more than ever. Google AI Overviews now appear in 25-48% of search results (BrightEdge, Q1 2026), and ChatGPT processes over 1 billion queries per month. For many industries, AI-generated answers are the new front page of Google — and if you're not cited, you're invisible.
A low GEO score means missed opportunities. When ChatGPT recommends "top project management tools" and cites your competitors but not you, potential customers never discover your product. Every uncited query is a lost lead. The sites scoring 70+ in this report are 3-5x more likely to appear in AI answers than those below 50.
